Black History Month: Honoring the Legacy of Leadership in Lawrence

Published Feb 5, 2025

Representation matters. When young African American boys and girls see themselves in positions of leadership, they believe in their own potential. This Black History Month, we honor the trailblazers who have helped shape the City of Lawrence: 🗳️ Sherron Freeman – First African American elected to the Common Council 📜 Leatrice Adkisson – First African American Clerk of the City of Lawrence 🏛️ Mayor Deb Whitfield – First African American Mayor in Marion County history Their stories—along with those of other inspiring community leaders—remind us of the power of diversity, representation, and progress.
