Summary

Mechanic position is responsible for providing general labor maintenance skills associated with performing vehicle maintenance and repairs of all City owned vehicles and heavy equipment.

 

Position Responsibilities:

Performs general labor functions associated with maintenance and repairs of all City owned vehicles. (Police, Fire, Street, DPW, Utilities and Parks).

Required Skills/Abilities: 

•Good verbal and written communication skills. Must be able to read and comprehend English language, correspondence, memos and other communications.

•Ability to listen, understand, and follow directions

•Utilize sound judgement, industry practices, and safety of equipment to ensure a safe work environment

•Ability to work in a variety of roles.

•Required to be in the on-call rotation

•Required to work after normal business hours and holidays if needed

•Knowledge and ability to perform work on diesel and hydraulic vehicles

•Knowledge of all tools and equipment to be able to perform the maintenance and repairs.

Physical Requirements: 

•Frequent and/or prolonged periods standing and walking.

•Occasionally sits, climbs, or balances, descends and ascends ladders, stoops, kneels and crouches. 

•Must be able to speak and hear plainly. 

•Near, distant, color, peripheral vision, depth perception and an ability to adjust focus are required. 

•Must be able to lift 50 pounds at times. 

•Manual dexterity as needed to operate a variety of machinery, tools and equipment.

•Must be able to work inside and outside with a various weather conditions and tolerate noise and smells 

 

Duties/Responsibilities:

•This position is responsible for participating in the mechanical repair and maintenance of City vehicles and equipment.

•Knowledge of air brake systems and prior experience with heavy equipment, trucks, and diesel engine repairs.

•Must be able to read and interpret schematics, shop manuals, scan tools, and computers to diagnose issues.

•Will disassemble units and inspect parts for wear using micrometers, calipers, and other thickness gauges.

•Performs engine, exhaust, electrical, brake, hydraulic, and transmission repairs on a variety of vehicles and equipment.

•Performs scheduled preventative maintenance functions, including checking the condition of and operation of batteries, tires, lights, transmissions, exhaust systems, brakes, etc.

•Performs a variety of engine diagnostic procedures.

•Performs emergency roadside repairs on vehicles as required, troubleshoots, vehicle/equipment failures at job sites.

•Completes required paperwork related to work orders and purchase requests.

•Performs other duties as assigned  

•Cleans and lubricates equipment, maintains work area free from debris and dirt, and readies or puts away tools as assigned.

•Closely follows directions to perform manual tasks, operate machinery, hold or supply materials and tools, and load or unload items on/off machinery or vehicles.

•May be give the tasked to assist with plowing the snow on City streets. 

Performs any unskilled job.

•Reports any issues to supervisor.  

•Performs other related duties as assigned.

•Responsible to properly perform all assigned work in a thorough and competent manner and within the time frame required by the department manager.

•Responsible for all personal safety and other equipment and tools issued by the City to perform assigned tasks; shall ensure that said equipment and tools are in good working order, operate safely and that all supplies and tools necessary to perform assigned tasks are available           and in proper and safe working condition.

•Shall perform all other duties as legally assigned by the Department Manager, Director of Operations or Superintendent.

•May be tasked with customer service-related issues with citizens of the City of Lawrence; 

•Polite and courteous behavior is always expected.

Education and Experience:

•Previous experience preferred.

•High school diploma or equivalent preferred.

•Must have some basic computer skills 

•Must possess and maintain a valid Indiana drivers license  

•Class B Indiana Commercial Driver’s License (CDL). Is strongly encouraged
