Kiwanis host celebration of Youth Leadership

March 13, 2018

Oaklandon Elementary second grader Tristan Perry (with her mother) addressed the gathering of Kiwanis and community leaders at the Sterrett Center March 13 where the organization recognized youth leadership and service throughout the city. Scott Maskell opened the breakfast celebration with introductions and Lawrence United Methodist Pastor Joe Johnson provided the invocation. Maskell recognized student leaders from Lawrence Central, Lawrence North, Harrison Hill, Fall Creek Valley, Circle K at Marian University; and Marge Crouch described the support the Kiwanis devote to Riley Children's Hospital. MSDLT Superintendent, Dr. Shawn Smith was the keynote speaker. Dr. Smith recognized the adult leaders in the audience and thanked them for partnering with students to show them effective leadership and community service models. He said the school district's "Learners Today--Leaders Tomorrow" is the motto the district hopes will train students to serve and lead in their communities for the next generation.
