"We have been married for more than 50 years."
October 12, 2022
Lazaro y Rosa A.
"In Mexico, we celebrate September 16 at night. Everyone decorates their houses with flags. People make barbacoa, tamales, tacos, and at night we celebrate with fireworks. The 16th is celebrated as the 4th of July here. In Mexico its celebrated with more color and more food.
We need more authentic food here. Sometimes the only thing left is to make it at home.
We come from a very small town called Sultepec, and we got married in 1970. We have been married for more than 50 years. Today's couples struggle to understand each other. Technology has changed everything. Back in my day there were values, and now it is no longer the case. We have the same beliefs and customs of our parents and our grandparents, and that is not seen much anymore. We always advise the Youth not to lose touch to their roots, their traditions, the food, the people.
Every time we go [to Mexico] we see less land. Things change. We used to grow our own crops on our land, and now we see less land and more structures.
This country is so beautiful, we [Latinos] are coming from everywhere, not only from Mexico."
