Who Fixes Potholes? Understanding Street Responsibilities in Lawrence
We know potholes can be frustrating, and we want to help you report them to the right place! Here’s a quick breakdown of who maintains our roads:
- INDOT (Indiana Department of Transportation): Responsible for state highways like Pendleton Pike (U.S. 36).
- City of Lawrence: Maintains all local roads within our city limits, including snow plowing and pothole repairs.
- City of Indianapolis (DPW): Handles major construction and reconstruction of primary and secondary arterial streets, plus certain collector streets listed in their thoroughfare plan.
- Potholes Near Train Tracks? The right of way on train tracks is controlled by CSX Railroad, not the City of Lawrence. If you notice potholes near the tracks, you can report them directly to CSX here.
Not sure who to contact? If you see a pothole or need road maintenance, reach out to us, and we’ll help direct your request! You can also report issues through: https://www.cityoflawrence.org/report-street-issue
