LPD honors fallen officer

March 6, 2017

The Lawrence FOP #159 and the Lawrence Police Department were joined by the immediate family of Officer Craig Herbert, Mayor Steve Collier, Lawrence Firefighters, and other City employees, for a small remembrance ceremony and Moment of Silence, in recognition of the 12th anniversary of Officer Herbert’s death in the line of duty.

LPD Chief David Hofmann said, “Etched upon the walls of the National Law Enforcement Memorial in Washington D.C. is the name of CRAIG S. HERBERT and an inscription that reads: 'It is not how these officers died that made them heroes.   It is how they lived.' Those words are as true and accurate today as they were in the early morning hours of March 6, 2005.”

While we yet mourn Officer Herbert's death, we also celebrate his life, and legacy. His fraternal brothers and sisters at LPD join his wonderful family as they remember the son, husband, father, sibling, grandson, uncle, friend, co-worker, colleague, teammate, public servant, and so much more, that Craig was.

Officer Herbert was born November 4, 1970 in Rushville, Indiana. He was a police officer with the Lawrence Police Department five years and a member of the LPD SWAT Team. He was a 12-year US Army veteran. He previously served as a member of the Fortville Police Department. Craig was a member of Lawrence Fraternal Order of Police Lodge #159 and American Legion Post #115, Rushville, Indiana.
