Summary
Maintenance Worker position is responsible for providing general labor maintenance skills associated with the repair and maintenance of City Parks, buildings, grounds and recreational equipment within the City of Lawrence Department of Parks and Recreation.
Essential Job Functions
Perform general labor functions associated with the maintenance and repair of city park locations, which may include the installation and maintenance of public playground sites, mowing of various park locations and athletic fields, performance of general maintenance duties to city owned building to include painting, minor repairs, cleaning and preventive maintenance practices, general landscaping functions to include tree planting, mulching, bed preparation and edging, repair fencing, picking up trash and debris and cutting trees, scrubs and weed eating, help in the preparation of grounds and facilities in association with special seasonal events and tournaments.
Respond to weather events in an effort to maintain safe access to park properties and building; operate chainsaw, snow blower and plow snow.
Performs general maintenance tasks necessary to keep vehicles, equipment and tools in operable condition, including inspecting equipment, checking and replacing fluids, greasing and cleaning of equipment; monitors equipment operations to maintain efficiency and safety; reports faulty equipment.
Transports, loads/unloads, and operates light construction and maintenance equipment as assigned.
Utilizes sound judgement, industry practices, and safety equipment to ensure a safe work environment for all employees and general public.
Ability to follow and issue instructions, remain self-motivated and work with staff and public cooperatively as needed.

Coordination of Work - Ability to plan and organize a daily work routine and establish priorities for the completion of work in accordance with sound time-management.
Physical Requirements / Work Environment
Frequent and/or prolonged periods standing and walking.
Occasionally sits, climbs or balances, descends and ascends ladders into trenches and manholes; stoops, kneels, crouches.
Must be able to speak and hear plainly.
Near, distant, color, peripheral vision, depth perception and an ability to adjust focus are required.
Must be able to lift 50 pounds at times.
Manual dexterity as needed to operate a variety of machinery, tools and equipment.
Work is performed both inside and outside with exposure to various weather conditions. Successful applicant may be exposed to intermittent noise, dust, dirt, odors, solvents, heights and confined spaces. Some work outside of normal operations hours is required.
Education and Experience
High school diploma or equivalent required.
One (1) to two (2) years’ experience involved in manual labor, grounds maintenance, building trades and equipment operation.
A combination of education, training and experience that provides requested knowledge, skills and abilities for this position may be substituted.
Ability to perform manual tasks that require lifting and carrying of objects in excess of fifty (50) pounds.
May be requested to obtain and maintain a valid Class “B” Indiana Commercial Driver’s License (CDL).
Additional Requirements
Requires a background investigation to include a local, state, and federal criminal history check, sex offender registry, and consumer report. Requires satisfactory results from pre-employment screening.
