There is no history without the women who birthed it!
March 21, 2023
"What do I admire about women? I admire the softness and the strength – the reverence and the roar. The nurturing spirit. The grounding presence. That maternal-ness that can only come from a woman but isn’t just reserved for her own children. Women are givers of life, and love.
The woman I admire most is my Mommy. Her name was Emma Jean. Maybe it’s because she was the oldest girl of nine, but she was the consummate nurturer. When I tell you that my mother did everything for me, I do mean everything. She changed my channel before we had a remote. She wrapped me in a towel and carried me from my bath until I was so big, I'm not how sure she carried me. When I woke up on Saturday mornings, all I had to do was say, "Mommy, I'm hungry!" and 20 minutes later I had breakfast in bed. And that was for whoever was in the house. She made your breakfast when you got up so it would be hot. And I know for certain that she waited until after my wedding day before she went on. She was a giver like no one I've ever known.
All that said, it’s a wonder that I can do anything for myself! But I have come to know that the good fortune I was born into – of being her daughter – was preparation for me to move forward all along. There are so many lessons I learned from her. Some direct, and others by example. I carry those with me. Or should I say, they carry me. Mommy taught me to trust God, love freely, and to have pride in who I am.
Women’s History Month is important, because a woman was your gateway into being. Throughout history, there are women known and unknown who have contributed to the fullness of every aspect of our lives. There is no history without the women who birthed it!"
