"I enlisted in March 1978. My Dad was my recruiter, so we discussed options, and I ended up choosing United States Air Force.  I served in a relatively peaceful time, there was no active shooting war, and I volunteered for overseas duty.

The thing I most remember was taking the bus to my base in Germany and I fell asleep. When we got there it was snowing. It was also May. After getting squared away, I began a six-week period of 12-hour shifts, and, in the first week, we were under a Black Alert. I also remember traveling around Germany for festivals and eating at Mama's Place right outside the base, which was a locally owned German restaurant with really good food."
