“It was very hard to see that my business was failing, but I couldn't give up.”
October 5, 2022
Alejandro, owner of Taco Express
"I was living in New York, and I was curious about starting a small business. A friend told me about a business that was being sold here [in Indiana]. We decided to travel to Indiana to learn about the state. On October 25, we moved to Lawrence, because we liked the city and the business. My wife and I started this small business with ten tables. It was just my wife, myself and another person who helped us from time to time.
The first nine months were quite difficult. The truth is that hardly anyone came in. It was very hard to see that my business was failing, but I couldn't give up. Over time, people began to arrive, and little by little, my small business of ten tables filled up every day.
Many asked me about the name of the business, and why I chose it. Many told me that Taco Express as a Mexican restaurant name did not sound authentic. The truth is that Taco Express was the previous name and well, we really liked the name, and we left it that way.
It was a small business, but it was growing, so over time we began to focus on taco trucks. Today, we have nine taco trucks in Marion County. The main goal for us has always been to share our culture with food. Our food is authentic and from home. In November, Taco Express will turn 17 years old in Lawrence. Thankfully it’s gone well for us."
