"I think you take your roots with you."
October 14, 2022
Rafael S.
"I was born in the Bronx, New York, but I lived in Indy long enough that I might as well say I’m a Hoosier. I AM a Hoosier. My parents come from the Dominican Republic, the best and most beautiful island in the Caribbean. We share the island with the beautiful people of Haiti, so we have good neighbors to our west.
I think you take your roots with you. Roots are something you grow up with, and wherever you go, you travel with them. I always encourage people, no matter where they are from, whether they are from the Dominican Republic or Kansas, Sweden or Bolivia, or Chile, that your family, your friends, all the things you learn when you’re a small person, that is part of who you are. Those are Roots. Then you take them with you and share them with other people. You make your neighborhood and your zip code. It’s all part of your roots. They become part of you. I always encourage people to never forget where they come from because that makes them special. We are all special in some way.
I have a very public job. I am always out there. I think that because I am out there, I do have a responsibility to myself, first as an individual, to be a good person and do good things. Knowing that I am in this position where people see me possibly as a Latino, I must represent. I do a lot of events where I know people are watching. What I want people to take away is that I am just one of many. There are so many men and women that do great work every day. Last names like Gonzalez, Gutierrez, Gomez, Sanchez, whatever it may be. I am not alone. I’m just one of many, but we do good work. And we work hard on all those things that I think people sometimes forget because they see us in a different way.
It is incumbent upon me in my position to be a positive person, but don’t be fooled by that because everyone in every space has that responsibility, as well, because you ever know who is watching. You may be the only Latino in your community, but people are watching you. They're not watching me. I can’t be everywhere. Everyone has a responsibility, no matter where they are from or who they are. You just never know who’s going to be watching you, your work.
Lawrence does a really good job of being so welcoming. I can’t tell you how many events I’ve done here in the last couple of years, but I know that when I come to Lawrence, I can see myself in Lawrence. A lot of people who come to visit or want to find a place to live, always feel more comfortable when they see people that look like a big melting pot. For the size of a city like Lawrence, it does a very good job of being inclusive, and I think that’s a major attraction point for people who may be wondering, you know, "where to go to school?", “Where should I live?" This is a nice community. If you are looking for a place to live, then Lawrence should be on your top list to give it a shot. Give it a look! Good schools and good people! Visit Lawrence!"
Nunca sabes quién te va a estar observando, o a tu trabajo.
